  • How is the "massage and movement" approach different?
Unlike traditional massage, M&M uses a combination of deep bodywork from the practitioner and specific movements from the client. It's not just a therapy that is "done to you," It's an educational process, with the goal of teaching your body to move and to operate in a new way. M&M is done in a series of sessions, each building on the next. We acknowledge that change takes time, and that a problem in one area means the rest of the body has compensated for it (You can't "fix" the problem without addressing the whole body) We are not “fixing you.” Many practitioners are “fix-it” practitioners who see a problem area and go digging away at it. Instead of treating individual symptoms, we aim to help make the STRUCTURE of your entire system more aligned in gravity, so that you can FUNCTION more optimally
  • How does massage & movement therapy feel?
M&M is generally relaxing & rejuvenating to receive. While certain areas of the body may have more sensation, depending upon chronic holding patterns & injuries, the experience should not be painful and should leave you feeling energized and grounded. Some describe it as "Bodywork with a side of personal training."
  • Is massage & movement for me?
Anyone and everyone can benefit from massage and movement therapy! We all have some forms of postural dysfunctions, whether that be from repetitive strain in sports, sitting in the same positions for hours on end, or just the way we live our lives day to day. Utilizing massage therapy techniques in conjunction with movement education can help to get you out of those long-standing patterns that may be causing you pain, discomfort or predisposing you to injury.
  • What can I expect from my first session?
Each session starts with 10-15 minutes of interview and posture/movement assessments. After assessments, a typical session consists of 60-75 minutes of hands-on bodywork and movement. During the session, you will be asked to stand, to make movements, and walk. Work is mostly done on a table but may also be done seated and standing. Draping (a sheet covering your body) is not used during M&M, because you will be moving on and off the table throughout the session. Please dress to your comfort level. Most clients wear either running shorts, compression shorts or underwear on the bottom and for women, a bra or sports bra on top. For men, if wearing underwear, please do not wear baggy boxers... boxer briefs or briefs are better suited for movement/bodywork. The pressure of the work ranges from very light to very deep depending on your needs. Techniques also are adapted for each client.
  • How should I prepare for my session?
Please come to your session showered & clean, without any creams/lotions on your skin, and wearing NO perfumes/fragrances. Regarding clothing, please dress to your comfort level. Most clients wear either running shorts, exercise shorts or compression shorts (biker shorts) on the bottom and for women, a sports bra or tank top on top. Pro Tip: Dress as if you were going to the gym or to a physical therapy appointment, you will be moving on and off the table throughout the session.
  • Will the changes from massage & movement actually last?
This is another incredible thing about M&M compared to many other hands-on modalities... the changes actually last! Rather than just aiming to "relax the body" or "fix your ache or pain," M&M is all about re-education through touch and movement. We and aim to teach your brain and body to move and to operate in a new way, making you an agent in your own healing. This means that the real changes occur days to weeks after the session, when you begin using your body in new and better ways. This creates deep permanent change because you are now acting different in your daily life, solidifying change in the body. Think of it like this: Once you've had M&M, you're like a Jaguar. No matter how long you drive a Jaguar, its not going to turn back into a Ford.
